Visit Sunderland Tyne and Wear and the surrounding villages and stay in b and b, hotel or vacation rental accommodation provided by BedPosts members.
The city of Sunderland in Tyne and Wear is positioned at the mouth of the River Wear.
As the former major ship-building industries have declined or closed, chemical, electronic, paper and motor manufacturing have replaced them, including the big Nissan factory.
North of the River Wear, at Monkwearmouth, is the superb Saxon relic of St Peter’s Church, founded by Benedict Biscop in AD 674. Biscop was an Anglican nobleman who is believed to have been the first person to use glass windows and stone edifices in the construction of churches. He also founded St Paul’s at Jarrow in AD 682. These two monasteries were the home of 600 monks.
