Visit South Shields Tyne and Wear and the surrounding villages and stay in bed breakfast, hotel or holiday home accommodation provided by BedPosts members.
South Shields is a port at the eastern end of industrial Tyneside with huge contrasts. On one side are the quays, warehouses and factories relating to its industrial life; on the other, attractive gardens and promenades provide holiday attractions. North of the town are the ruins of the Roman fort of Arbeia, built to guard the supply routes for the legions on the Roman Wall. At Jarrow, 2 miles west, the mainly Saxon St Paul’s Church stands near the south entrance to the new Tyne tunnel. The church is part of the monastery where the Venerable Bede (673-735), historian and scholar, wrote his history of the English Church.
