Fareham is mentioned in the Domesday book as “Fernham” in 1086, although the town is recorded even earlier as as “Fearnham” in 970. The name derives from Old English meaning “Homestead where ferns grow”.
Fareham is a residential town and shopping centre for Portsmouth commuters, but serving some Gerogian dwellings as an indication of its past. At the waterside a few small ships brave the passage up from Portsmouth Harbour.
