Visit Southampton Hampshire and the surrounding villages and stay in bed and breakfast, hotel or holiday home accommodation provided by BedPosts members.
Southampton is an ancient town that is now Britain's chief terminal port for Transatlantic traffic and many other routes besides. The largest liners afloat can use the Ocean Terminal; smaller vessels conduct sight- seers round the harbour. Southampton is favoured by a double tide arising from its position opposite the Isle of Wight. Consequent on war damage there is much that is new; but stretches of the medieval wall remain, also the 14th-century Bar Gate, the Norman House, the Wool House and many other ancient buildings. From West Quay in 1620 the Pilgrim Fathers set sail for Plymouth in the Mayflower, on the first stage of their voyage to America.
