Wimborne Minster bed and breakfast & hotel accommodation

Visit Wimborne Minster Dorset and the surrounding villages and stay in B&B, hotel or self-catering accommodation provided by BedPosts members.

The town of Wimborne Minster in Dorset carries the name of the church. This venerable town in the valley of the River Stour is dominated by its great Minster. It has 16,000 inhabitants. Poole is 5 miles distant.

There is a splendid approach from Blandford to this little market town, down a long avenue of beeches, which skirts the triple-banked Iron Age defensive earthworks of Badbury Rings, centred in the heathlands of east Dorset, with five main roads radiating from it. Wimborne makes an ideal centre for touring the area. Its prosperity was formerly based on wool, but now comes from market gardening.

Wimborne Minster has dozens of buildings dating from 15th century and still has a town crier who does his job on at weekends and on bank holidays.

The lantern formed by the partly Norman central tower is of particular interest; so are the chained library, the 14th-century Astronomical Clock, and many fine monuments and tombs. Two miles north west stands Kingston Lacy, home of the Bankes family for 300 years.

The twin-towered Church of St Cuthberga (Wimborne Minster), one of the great churches of Dorset, embraces almost every style of architecture from Norman to late Gothic. On the west tower of the church is the Quarter jack clock, which has the figure of a brilliantly clad grenadier to strike the quarter hours with a hammer. The Priest's House Museum has a collection of antiques and some of the best horse brasses in the country.

Wimborne Minster is the home to the World Wide Web inventor, Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee.
