The Cornish town of Porthleven was renowned for its shipbuilding and fishing industries, both of which exist today.
The inner harbour is lined with galleries, shops, pubs, restaurants and cafés. On the north side of the outer harbour is a sea-buffeted platform of deeply pocketed and riven slate where a huge boulder, the Giants Rock, is exposed at low tide. It is believed to be a glacial 'erratic' probably embedded in an ice floe and carried here during the last Ice Age. Victorian villas on the South Quay create a pleasing background to the harbour road and bustling quayside.
