Northampton is the county town of Northamptonshire. Histotically it goes back to the Bronze Age. Northampton Castle was an occasional residence for royalty and regularly hosted Parliament. Two medieval battles were fought here. King Charles II had the town walls and most of the castle destroyed after it supported Parliament (the Roundheads) in the Civil War.
Industry changed from shoemaking to engineering to distribution and finance.
The historic market square dates back to 1235.
