Visit Maesteg Bridgend and the surrounding villages and stay in b and b, hotel or vacation rental accommodation provided by BedPosts members.
Maesteg, is in the historic county of Glamorgan. Maesteg or “Fairfield”, as it would be known in English, is a typical up-growth in the South from the economic circumstance affecting the great coalfield. It is both town and urban district, but is better thought of as the latter. The communities around it within the conurbation find it convenient as a shopping centre, and all roads lead to it. But its prosperity depends on that of the neighbourhood's activity. When bituminous coal commanded a world market from the South, Maesteg on the River Llynfi grew to a population of 25,600. The depression of the 1930s affected it as severely as it was felt throughout all the South. In twenty years, the population had dropped by 10 per cent, and its future depends on the efforts made to introduce new light industries and plans to reclaim the South once more for woodland.
