The town of Knutsford, Cheshire, has narrow streets and old black-and-white houses. Elizabeth Gaskell's novel ‘Cranford’ was modelled on Knutsford. She was married in 1832 in the 18th-century parish church, and her grave is behind the 17th-century Unitarian chapel.
Tatton Hall, built circa 1800, was the home of the Egerton family and houses a fine collection of furniture, pictures, china, silver and glass. It is surrounded by 54 acres of formal gardens and woodland laid out by Humphry Repton (1752-1818), and is one of the National Trust’s most visited properties.
The giant radio telescope of Jodrell Bank is 6 miles to the south. The Mark I radio telescope has a dish aerial 250 ft in diameter, weighing 2000 tons. The Concourse Building, opened in 1966, has an exhibition of radio astronomy, closed-circuit television demonstrations, and a model radio telescope, which Visitors can operate.
