Hertford, population about 28,000, is the county town of Hertfordshire. It was first settled in Anglo Saxon times. The Normans built Hertford Castle to protect London from the Danes. King John of France was imprisoned in the castle in 1359. The castle was used by Parliament during the Great Plague of London.
The town centre has a Victorian Corn Exchange, beautiful buildings and decorated plasterwork. The Shire Hall which stands in the middle of the town was built in 1769, and was designed by Robert Adam.
