Ashbourne is one of the most attractive market towns in Derbyshire, often called “the gateway to the Peak”, as it stands on the fringe of the Peak District National Park. It's famed for its annual two-day football match, in which one half of the town plays the othe with the goals three miles apart! In Church Street is the 13th to 14th century Church of St Oswald, one of the most pictureque parish churches in England, with a spire 212 ft high. The church is renowned for its 18th century white marble sculpture of Penelope Boothby by Thomas Banks. She was the daughter of a local family and died aged five in 1791. The church also contains several monuments and effigies of the Cokaynes, a notable local family in the 15th and 16th centuries.
Sir John Cokayne founded the grammar school in 1585, and the original stone-built Elizabethan building opposite the church is still used by boarders of the new grammar school. Ashbourne Hall, the home of the Cokaynes, although much altered, is now the county library. Almost opposite the old grammar school is the 17th century red-brick mansion where Samuel Johnson often visited his poet friend Dr John Taylor.
