Stockton-on-Tees is now part of Teesside. This town has the widest High Street in England where, every Wednesday and Saturday, an open-air market is held. In 1827, John Walker, a Stockton chemist, invented striking matches and sold them from his shop for two years before others stole his idea. Sir Christopher Wren was mistakenly reported to have help to design the Church of St Thomas, completed in 1712.
