The village of St Osyth in Essex has a very imposing range of monastic buildings. The priory, which dates largely from the 12th century, was founded by St Osyth, wife of a 7th-century East Anglian king, who was beheaded by the Danes in AD 653.
The buildings were extended by successive owners, notably Lord Darcy. The gatehouse is beautiful.
