The town of Skelmersdale in West Lancashire, with about 40.000 inhabitants, is six miles from Wigan, thirteen from Liverpool and fifteen from Preston.
It grew during the Industrial Revolution with the exploitation of coal. It was further expanded in 1961 with the building of a "New Town".
In 2012 a £20m regeneration project was presented to create jobs to replace those lost since the demise of the coal industry.
