Sherborne St John is a small place, with an old church, which preserves a village atmosphere, even though Basingstoke creeps nearer. A mile to the north-east, along the Bramley road, is The Vyne, a wonderful Tudor manor house with later additions, built for Lord Sandys, Chancellor to Henry VIII. Its classical portico was added in 1654. The house and its grounds, with a lake, are owned by the National Trust, and are open to the public. A mile further north along the same road is the moated manor house Beaurepaire, seat of the Brocas family.
