Visit Plymouth Devon and the surrounding villages and stay in bed breakfast, hotel or self catering cottage accommodation provided by BedPosts members.
Plymouth is a city in Devon which became a significant shipping port during the industrial revolution. The city is still heavily influenced by shipbuilding today and there are many marine and maritime businesses in the area.
Plymouth might have been designed by nature for a seaport - a broad tongue of land, its coast fretted by creeks and coves, looking out on to the estuary of five rivers. It is old, but reconstruction after war damage has been on such a scale that the City Centre, for example, has a completely new look. However, one can still enjoy the Hoe, where Francis Drake played out his game of bowls; the aquaria of the Royal Marine Biological Laboratory in the cliffs below; and Sutton Pool, departure-point of the Mayflower. On the Hoe, too, is Smeaton's Tower, upper part of the previous Eddystone Lighthouse, removed in 1878 to make way for the present lighthouse, visible (in clear weather) 14 miles to seaward.
