Nottingham bed and breakfast & hotel accommodation

Visit Nottingham Nottinghamshire and the surrounding villages and stay in B&B, hotel or holiday accommodation accommodation provided by BedPosts members.

Nottingham is not lacking in history. This town, because of its good planning, appears to be modern. The proud civic buildings include a Council House (1929) designed with a dome and pediment that derive from St Paul's Cathedral.

The town of Snotingaham was occupied by the Danes in 868, and the imposing Nottingham castle was built on its present rock site after the Norman Conquest. A Royal Charter was granted by Henry II. Having been held by the Royalists, the castle was demolished in 1651, but rebuilt in an Italianate style by William Cavendish, the 1st Duke of Newcastle, only to be burned by Luddite rioters in the 19th century, and later restored. The castle is now leased by the Duke of Newcastle to the Corporation, which has converted it into a museum and art gallery. Bronzes of Robin Hood and his men by a local sculptor have been set below the castle wall. The Corporation has also acquired Elizabethan Wollaton Hall as well as Byron's home.

The famous annual Goose Fair, traditionally held in the market place, now spreads its stalls and amusements over a less restricted site at the edge of the forest. The market place has been planted with trees and flowers, and the market itself put under cover.

Though Nottingham was originally celebrated for lace curtains and carvings in alabaster, both now out of fashion, the city has kept up with the times, aided undoubtedly by its central position and by the navigable Trent on which it stands.
