Norwich is a historic city (boots and shoes have replaced the medieval clothing industry) revolves around Norwich castle and Norwich cathedral. The former, of which Roger Bigod's keep is the most impressive relic, now houses the museum and art gallery (fine collection of the Norwich school of painters), Other notable museums are at Strangers' Hall and the Bridewell. The cathedral, its spire rising to 312 ft., is (excepting only Durham) the most notable example of Norman Work in the country, particularly in its nave, south transept and apse. Note the episcopal throne, the 15th-century stalls and misericords in the choir, and the vaulted and embossed roof (also in the Cloisters, where the bosses are newly coloured and easier to see in detail). In the close, with its old houses, are King Edward's School (1533) and its chapel, and the Erpingham and Ethelbert gateways. Of the thirty medieval churches still surviving, the largest and most impressive is St Peter Mancroft. Fine individual buildings, Tudor and medieval, are Suckling and Armada Houses, Blackfriars Hall, Samson and Hercules House, Maddermarket Theatre and the chequered flint Guildhall, which shares the new civic centre with the contrasting 20th-century City Hall. Elm Hill, Ber, Oak and King Streets all have attractive old houses, while later periods are represented by the Old Meeting House (1693), the Georgian Assembly Rooms and many 18th century private houses.
