Llangollen in Denbighshire is positioned on the River Dee in North East Wales. Walkers will enjoy exploring the nearby Berwyn mountains which are largely covered by wild vegetation such as heather and bracken. The town sits in the fertile and green Dee Valley, surrounded by the Llantysilio and Berwyn hills.
The river is at the heart of the village and on good-weather days people congregate around the Elizabethan stone bridge watching the fast waters bursting over the riverbed rocks. The bridge was extended in 1863 for the railway line, which linked Wrexham with Barmouth.
Following the railways closure in the 1960s, a preservation society was formed and today steam trains operate the route to Carrog. The society expects that it will eventually reopen the line to Corwen.The Llangollen canal runs parallel to the railway and road. Pioneered by Thomas Telford, it provides another transport leisure link for horse-drawn narrowboats, which take visitors along the canal and over the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, where a cast iron trough carries the canal above the River Dee.
Take a hike up the hill to Dinas Bran a castle once occupied by the Princes of Powys. The ruins are quite extensive but the magnificent views up the Dee Valley will have made the effort of the walk well worth while.
Behind Dinas Bran are the long tiered limestone cliffs of Creigiau Eglwyseg which stretch to a place called World's End!
