Visit Lechlade on Thames Gloucestershire and the surrounding villages and stay in bed breakfast, hotel or holiday accommodation accommodation provided by BedPosts members.
Lechlade, though a Cotswolds town, derives as much interest from its connection with the River Thames. Actually it's at the confluence of three rivers — the Coln, the Leach and the Thames.
Just south of the town you can cross the Thames using the old toll bridge, the Halfpenny [or Ha'penny] Bridge built in 1792.
The magnificent church, with its distinctive spire, dates from the late 15th century when it was built largely from the same quarries at Taynton that later provided the stone for St Paul's. In 1815 the church inspired the poet Percy Shelley to write: 'Thou too, aerial pile! Whose pinnacles point from one shrine like pyramids of fire'.
Commercial traffic on the rivers and canal have given over to pleasure craft and it is possible to hire small boats from the boatyard near the Ha'penny Bridge.
