Keswick has a moot hall built in 1813 in the middle of the main square. The 18th century Greta Hall north of the square was the home of the poet Robert Southey. His tomb is in the churchyard at Great Crosthwaite, north-west of the town.
Two miles south of Keswick, is Watendlath which is set amid green fields, dark hills and the waters of a tarn, and used by Hugh Walpole as the setting for his novel Judith Paris. The road to Watendlath passes through attractive country, including the beauty spot of Ashness Bridge.
Derwent Water which is 1 ¼ miles across is the widest of lakes around Keswick. St Herbert, a disciple of St Cuthbert, had a hermitage on the island in the lake in AD 685. The surviving ruins are of a later building.
The walks around Keswick are superb. Castle Head, a 529-ft hill half a mile south, gives a fantastic view of Derwent Water and Bassenthwaite Lake; Latrigg hill which is 1203ft is a mile north-east of Keswick, provides a higher, wider panorama; and Friar's Crag, a headland on Derwent Water's eastern shore, was said by the writer John Ruskin to be one of Europe's best scenic viewpoints.
