Ipswich is an industrial town at the head of Orwell Estuary, and largest port between Thames and Humber. Not many of its medieval churches are notable, though the civic church, St Mary-le-Tower, rebuilt in late 19th century Gothic, has a 176-ft. tower and fine carvings, including a pulpit attributed to Grinling Gibbons. The best ecclesiastical building is the Unitarian Chapel (1699), with much period detail and box-pews. Wolsey's Gate, red-brick with royal coat of arms, is the only relic of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey's project to build a college in his birthplace.
