Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire is joined to Roman Godmanchester by the famous causeway and its 14th century bridge which crosses the Great Ouse River.
Huntingdon's Norman castle is now only a mound.
Huntingdon is the birthplace of Oliver Cromwell, he and Pepys were both students at the grammar school in the market square, once a hospice, and still retaining its Norman front. Both churches are remarkable. Of the many Georgian houses, one was the home for some years of the poet Cowper; and the town hall is of the same period. The George and the Eagle are both fine old inns, the former notable for its picturesque coaching yard.
