Great Massingham, Norfolk, is 10 miles from Swaffham.
The village green is one of the largest in Norfolk. Spreading out from it, the houses are mainly built from split flints, giving a colour-washed appearance in strong sunlight.
To one side of the green is the Church of St Mary where, on entering through the tiny chancel door you see a blaze of gold - the entire front of the high altar is an intricate woodcarving finished in gold leaf, the work of Norwich carver W. C. Cooper, in 1953. He based the central figures on Leonardo da Vinci’s Annunciation, creating them separately in limewood and placing them upon a block of oak which forms the background.
Just 6 miles away is Castle- Acre Priory built nearly 1000 years ago by the first Cluniac order of monks.
