Epworth is a small picturesque town in Lincolnshire.
The founder of the Methodist Church, John Wesley, was born in Epworth in 1703 in the Old Rectory, where his father, Samuel Wesley, was the rector. The house was rebuilt in 1709 after a fire, and contains furniture associated with the Wesley family. American Methodists financed much of the restoration. Samuel Wesley's tombstone is in the churchyard; his son once preached from it, after being barred from the church. The church contains the font where the family was baptised - ]ohn was the 15th of 19 children and there is a large, stone Methodist church, built in 1889, near the centre of the town. Epworth's market cross was another early pulpit used by John Wesley.
