Until recently, Droitwich was best known for the therapy treatment afforded by its brine water baths. The water was pumped from a lake over a bed of rock salt deposited 200 ft below ground, and as it contained 2½ lb. of salt in each gallon, 10 times more than sea water, it was extremely buoyant. Water is still pumped, with a reduced brine content to an open-air pool in Droitwich Park.
Droitwich has the elegant atmosphere of Bath, and has some black-and-white timbered buildings, yet it is a lively market town. The Church of the Sacred Heart and St Catherine has walls and a ceiling covered with striking mosaics depicting the life of St Richard.
