Coventry, Warwickshire, is a thriving city, with a growing population of 350,000. It probably owes its origin to the erection in the 7th century of an Anglo-Saxon convent. However, it was the later Benedictine abbey founded by Leofric, Earl of Mercia in the 11th century that gave the town its first impetus to growth. No account of Coventry can ignore the legend of Godiva, who, it is said, in order to obtain relief for the town from the taxes levied by her husband Leofric, rode naked through the city, modesty preserved only by the length of her hair. The first recorded instance of the story only dates back to 1235; with the embellishment of a “Peeping Tom” not added until a century later. In A.D. 1553 it was granted its first charter.

From the Middle Ages, wool, needles and leather all contributed to Coventry's prosperity. The mechanization of the 19th century brought the manufacture of sewing-machines and bicycles right into the city. The Daimler Company produced the first English motorcar in 1898 and the car industry increased rapidly, giving rise in its turn to aircraft production. Workers not only from every part of Britain but from all over the world have been drawn here.

In November 1940, much of the city was wiped out by a devastating air raid which almost completely destroyed the Cathedral Church of St Michael (it had only been raised to this dignity in 1918, the church previously being within the diocese of Lichfield), leaving only the magnificent medieval tower and spire standing.
