Visit Burnley Lancashire and the surrounding villages and stay in bed and breakfast, hotel or self catering cottage accommodation provided by BedPosts members.
The town of Burnley in Lancashire, with 75,000 inhabitants, is surrounded by green and brown fells.
Once a cotton-weaving centre, it was hard hit in the depression years of the 1930s but it fought back and a splendid new town centre reflects its modern prosperity.
Towneley Hall was the fortified home of the Towneley family from the 13th century until 1902. The present house dates from the 14th and 16th centuries; its dungeons and battlements remain, and it houses a museum and art gallery.
To the south-east, the A646 cuts through the great rocky Cliviger Gorge. Three miles to the west, near Padiham, stands Gawthorpe Hall, an early 17th-century house restored in the 1860s.
