Bexhill has an example of Modernist architecture renowned the world over on the seafront of this peaceful Victorian-Edwardian seaside town: the recently-restored De La Warr Pavilion sitting behind the cupolas and balustrades of the 1911 Colonnades - and beside Marina Court Avenue with its Moorish arches and little turret (an influence of the British Empire).
At low tide sand appears below Bexhill's shingle beach. In 1901 it became Britain's first mixed bathing beach. About then its seafront hosted the first motor races; even now Bexhill still has classic car events on the August Bank Holiday.
Bexhill Museum, near the seafront clock tower, exhibits dinosaur fossils, archaeological finds and some pieces on the town's history and growth. Highlights from the costume collection include a Dior gown, a Mary Quant rain cape, some early bathing costumes and a tiny dress worn by the infant Winston Churchill.
Consider going uphill from the railway station to visit Bexhill Old Town, which has charming weatherboarded white houses, typical of the Kent and Sussex Weald.
