Banbury, Oxfordshire, is a market town on the River Cherwell, population of 45,000. Famed for Banbury cakes and the “Fine Lady upon a White Horse” immortalised in the nursery rhyme “Ride a cock horse to Banbury Cross”.

The town's history goes back to the Iron Age, 200 BC. It has since been settled by Romans and Saxons, though few buildings survive from earlier than the 17th century. This is largely due to a kind of demolition frenzy among Banbury's inhabitants. In the 17th century, they petitioned Parliament to pull down their great castle so that they could use the stone to repair the damage caused to the town by two Civil War sieges. In the 18th century, the town's folk blew up their old church rather than restore it. The original Banbury Cross of the nursery rhyme was destroyed, too, in an upsurge of Puritanism in 1602. The present cross at the bottom of the hill on the A41 is a Victorian replacement of the original Cross and dates only from 1859. The “fine lady” of the rhyme might've been a member of the Fiennes family, who still live at nearby Broughton Castle. The ride to the cross might've been a May Morning ceremony.
