Visit Bakewell Derbyshire and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast, hotel or vacation rental accommodation provided by BedPosts members.
Bakewell is a handsome little town on the River Wye, crossed by a medieval bridge, and convenient to visiting Haddon and Chatsworth, with Monsal Dale just 4 miles north west. Bakewell has several 17th and 18th century stone houses including the Market and Town Halls, Catliffe and Bath Houses, Holme Hall. Bakewell has a cruciform church, typical of this county, built between the 12th - 14th century. The Church has fine effigies in the Vernon chapel and a stump of a Saxon Cross in the churchyard.
The origin of the name Bakewell comes from Old English. It translates as “Spring or stream of a man called Badeca”. It's first recorded as being called “Badecanwelle” and then as “Badequella” in the Doomsday book.
